Guessing game 'Music Is the Answer' and The Kingdom Choir's Karen Gibson MBE takes us to The Music Is Black Exhibition
The Kingdom Choir's Karen Gibson MBE and Professor Emeritus James Walvin OBE take us to V&A East's 'The Music Is Black' exhibition to dive into the origins of 'Amazing Grace'.
Feelgood favourites, hidden gems and fresh new tunes to groove and soothe you. DJ Spoony serves up a brilliant selection of classic soul, disco, soulful house, R&B, funk, UK garage, reggae, hip-hop, doo-wop, yacht rock and more. Our genial host also gives his ‘New 2 Spoon’ record of the week another spin.
Spoony has another edition of his addictive guessing game ‘Music Is The Answer’. Will you be able to work out which song Spoony will be playing later in the show based purely on the random (and often hilarious) comments people leave below the song’s official music video online? Each week a different member of the Radio 2 presenting family voices the real-life comments. Join in the fun, text 88291, WhatsApp 0-800-288-291 or e-mail spoony@bbc.co.uk. All stabs in the dark and educated guesses are welcome!
Throughout June Spoony is bringing you his highlights from V&A East museum's inaugural exhibition, The Music Is Black, a celebration of Black British music. Tonight we hear from the founder and conductor of The Kingdom Choir, Karen Gibson MBE, who has donated her outfit from when the choir sang 'Stand By Me' at The Royal Wedding in Windsor in 2018. However, she is joined by historian Professor Emeritus James Walvin OBE from the University of York to talk about a powerful item which is near the entrance of the exhibition - John Newton's sermon book from 1773. They address the history of how the origins of Black music, as we know it, came to the UK and the contradictions of the hymn 'Amazing Grace'.
