The word Pyewipe came from the local colloquial expression for a Plover
or Lapwing often found around the low-lying areas of Lincolnshire, and
the Inn was first licensed in 1778.
It was called Pyewipe House in those days and mainly
served the numerous sailing barges traversing the Fossedyke. By 1804 the
maps show it as Pyewipe Inn, the Inn being officially brought under the
Justices Licensing Act in 1897.
