Looking forward down the path.
The path suitable for everyone
Leaving The City
As you walk along the Foss Bank you are walking parallel to Carholme Road leaving Lincoln heading for the A46 Bypass Road. The Foss Bank is fairly quiet but you must still keep an eye out for cars near the houses.

You will soon come to the end of the roadway and will start on the pathway. Beware as this is a bridleway and a cycle path. There is plenty of room on the path but it is worth being aware of bikes an horses.

You'll see many swans

Whilst at the Brayford Pool you will have definitely seen swans and maybe even a few families of ducks, but it is now on the quiet Fossedyke where you'll start to spot family groups swimming between the boats.

Other wildlife to keep an eye out for are dragonflies during spring flying low to the water. The reed fringe growing in the shallower water at the canal's edge provides food and shelter them and damselflies.

Wildflowers and butterflies can be found on the canal banks.

In the canal itself you will find pike, eels, perch, roach and silver breen swimming amongst the Marsh Marigold and Yellow Waterlillies (also known as 'brandy bottles' because when the flower dies off it looks just like a little round green bottle bobbing in the water).

If you are very lucky you may even see a grass snake swimming down the canal or a heron or kingfisher keeping an eye out for the smaller fish.

Along the bridleway

There have been sightings of Otters in the canal and as far as Brayford Pool although these may have been mink which are known to inhabit the area.

Continue along the walkway. It's worth keeping note of the sometimes steep sides into the canal if you have small children or dogs.

As you continue along this stretch you'll see many fisherman on this side of the bank.
