"I always like to keep myself active. I really miss working on the allotments now they've been sold off, and don't get me started on that! I love to get involved in community affairs, whether it's organising events at the Centre or the local Mela, and City Farm takes up a bit of time. But my biggest project听has been听taking over the running of Saffrons. Things were tricky for a while, getting used to Kuljit as manager and then Vinnie acting like he's the boss. I was really disappointed that I wasn't able to take up Mani's offer of a partnership. But now I'm the owner! (after a little help from Suresh).
"Rita thinks I need a bit more "get up and go" and that I let people walk all over me, especially Jai, but she's so much more confident and outgoing than me. The kids have definitely inherited that spark of Rita's too; they're so self-assured. It's great watching them when Rita's not around - they just take over and start bossing me about! Sure, sometimes I just want a bit of peace and quiet and I've got a refuge in the City Farm now. It's the ideal place to escape to from all the noise and rows, although I wouldn't change my family for the world really.
"I wish I could have spent more time with Arun and Jasmine when they were growing up, but I had to work mornings at the petrol station and evenings in the restaurant just to make ends meet. I thought things would be different with Krishan, but with the way things are going at the moment there's not much chance of that - with Rita working all hours now for the police, and Jas away in New York then jetting all over Europe now, I sometimes despair of us ever spending time together as a family again. That's why our trip to India was so great, all of us together for a whole week. I'm so grateful to Suresh for arranging it. It was just what Rita and I needed to get things in perspective and realise just how much we really love each other."
