4. Angels
Do you remember the Doctor? Ten-part drama starring Charlie Craggs, with Jodie Whittaker.
Abby gets an interview with her favourite blogger, Larry Nightingale. The two think that maybe some creatures called Weeping Angels have something to do with the country-wide disappearances. Abby figures that meeting a strange man at night in Glasgow Necropolis is probably fine, yeah?

SCENE 1
泭
EXT. LONDON STREET - NIGHT.
泭
We hear a long eerie note as CLEO walks home.
泭
Nighttime London atmos: the occasional car and
siren in the distance, some chatter as people pass by.
泭
Beep SFX as Cleo begins recording on her phone.
泭
CLEO
Podcast idea: could we do an episode
on memory? Like when a load of people thought they remembered Nelson Mandela
dying in the 80s. But he hadnt, they
just remembered it for some reason.
Next episode: was he a ghost all along?!
泭
Eerie beep flows into a thoughtful tune.
泭
The clatter of something behind her. Cleo pauses and turns to look around.
泭
CLEO
Oh hello?
泭
She starts walking again.
泭
CLEO
Note two: dont forget to actually
re-listen to these voice notes.
Otherwise genius ideas get forgotten forever.
泭
Beep SFX. Ahead of her, we hear a police radio.
泭
CLEO
What the actual...?
泭
POLICE OFFICER
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭 (into radio) Yeah sarge, will do.
泭
Outside Cleos building, a group of police officers can be heard
milling around. We hear their footsteps, chatter, patrol car
doors slamming, radios being used.
泭
Cleo approaches a POLICE OFFICER, her stride quicker.
泭泭
CLEO
Hi, sorry, can I get into my building please?
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭
A crackle of static and faint voice on the officers radio.
泭
OFFICER
Do you live here, miss?
泭
CLEO
No, I just figured breaking and entering
in front of the police was the perfect crime. What the hell is going on?
泭
OFFICER
Were investigating a potential
kidnapping.
泭
CLEO
Wait Is it Jordan Proctor?
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭
OFFICER
Im afraid Im not at liberty to
discuss
泭
CLEO
Im his sister. So if you know anything,
Im pretty sure you have to tell me.
Its the First Amendment or something.
泭
OFFICER
(BEAT)The person were looking for is a young woman. If your brothers missing
you should file a missing persons report.
泭
CLEO
(Crushed) Forget it.
(Gathering herself up)
Wait so, this woman, is she part of
the epidemic?
泭
OFFICER
Im sorry?
CLEO
The disappearances
泭
OFFICER
What disappearances?
泭
CLEO
Its on the news.
泭
OFFICER
(skeptical)Yeah, well, maybe YouTube
isnt the most reliable source.
泭
CLEO
(defensive)Im not talking about YouTube babe.
泭
OFFICER
Alright miss. This is an active crime
scene so Im going to need to get back
to work. Unless you want to talk to me
about your brother.
泭
CLEO
Can I just get into my building please?
泭
OFFICER
Of course. Does that shifty fella live
here too?
泭泭
CLEO
Wait what?
泭泭
OFFICER
The man who was with you. Just now?
泭
CLEO
What did he look like?
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭
OFFICER
Tall, dark hair, dark clothes. Sorry,
I just assumed he was with you.
泭
CLEO
No. Im on my own.泭
泭
OFFICER
Right. My mistake.
泭
More thunder. Cleo walks inside.
泭
CLEO
(Softly spoken) Jordan?!
泭
We hear the redacted sound mixed with a soft piano.
泭
CREDITS
Doctor Who Redacted: Episode Four. By Catherine Brinkworth.
泭
The piano tune keeps going for a moment before picking up the pass with a big beat of drums, strings and synths that turns into the Main Theme tune, a symphony of synths and strings revelling in alien weirdness.泭

SCENE 2
泭
INT. CLEOS FLAT NIGHT
泭
SFX: Cleo starts boiling a kettle
泭
SHAWNA
(on phone)Thats so weird.
泭
CLEO
I know, right?
泭
SHAWNA
Im sure hell be ok babe.
泭
CLEO
Yeah, I know. Hey, listen, Ill
see you later for the podcast

泭
SFX: Cleos kettle boils, and then

泭泭
SCENE 3
泭
INT. CLEO'S BEDROOM - NIGHT.
泭
We hear thunder outside. Cleos sheets rustle
shes on Skype in bed.
泭
Ominous spooky music builds as ABBY tells her ghost story.
泭
ABBY
(On Skype. Quiet, nearly whispered)
Heres a scary story to tell in
the dark. Its the story of Wester
Drumlins. A crumbling house where
people go missing. Where cars gather
rust in the driveway because those
who come to explore step through
the front door...and never come
back out. You shouldnt ignore that
no entry sign thats been nailed
to the gate for decades. But lets
imagine that you have, and youre trespassing into the house right now.
泭
The music suddenly stops and instead we here a strong drum beat like footsteps.
泭
ABBY
The door creaks when you open it.
You know theres something hiding inside, lurking in the dusty ballroom and up the rotting stairs. You just dont know what
it is yet.
泭
Drum beat gets louder and more purposeful with multiple drums.
泭
ABBY (CONTD)
You look down the hallway. Its a
bright day, but the grime in this
house makes it hard to breathe. Out
of a broken window you can see the
garden, and in it, a statue made of
stone. Weathered and chipped. Its
an angel with wings, and its head in
its hands, crying.
泭
Was that a noise outside? You turn
to look and BAM!!!! Without a sound,
that stone angel is behind you, fangs
bared, six foot tall, its wings spread!
It can kill you with a touch. But it
can only move when youre not watching.
So whatever you do...
泭
The music powerfully builds and then suddenly stops.
泭
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭 ABBY (CONTD)
...dont blink.
泭
We hear heavy rain from outside.
泭
SHAWNA
Dun dun duuuuuun!
泭
ABBY
What do you think?
泭
CLEO
Babe that was scarier than a mouse
in your chicken bucket. That was good.
泭
SHAWNA
Goosebumps! No it was so good,
泭
ABBY
Its my opener for the next episode.
泭
SHAWNA
That story could literally only be
more scary if it was true.
泭
ABBY
Well, it might be true Shawna.
I think the stories about the Weeping
Angels are connected to the blue box somehow.
泭
CLEO
But wait what about the weird amnesia
and the missing people babe?
ABBY
Well thats just it, I think the
Weeping Angels are linked to these disappearances. Ive checked the news
and there are 90 people officially
missing now. Mostly in London, a couple
in Cardiff. Its weird actually, cos I
thought it was 100 yesterday, so I
dunno. Maybe they turned up...dead
or alive.
泭
CLEO
Everyones forgetting stuff.
泭
SHAWNA
Hello! Cleo might not want to
hear all this. About missing people.
泭
ABBY
Sorry Cleo.
泭
CLEO
Its fine. He probably went on Ex on
the Beach again without telling us.
泭
ABBY
And even in the worst case scenario, the weeping angels don't necessarily kill people.
泭
CLEO
Oh...lovely.
泭
SHAWNA
Abby!
泭泭
ABBY
I do have some good news about the podcast.
泭
CLEO
Alien foetus in a jar?
泭
ABBY
Afraid not. But Ive got an interview...
with Larry Nightingale!!
泭
Silence.
SHAWNA
Who?
泭
CLEO
Larry Nightingale? Sounds like a
crooner.
泭
SHAWNA
Ah yeah, I think my Dad had him on
Vinyl actually.
泭
ABBY
Guys! Hes the foremost blogger on
blue box phenomena.
泭
CLEO
Try say that with three fish fingers in
your mouth.
泭
ABBY
He writes for the Into The Unknown blog, which you guys know because I mention it basically all the time.
泭
SHAWNA
...um...
泭
CLEO
(lying)Oh yeah of course yeah.
泭
ABBY
Hes written some of my favourite
articles on there, including this
whole one about the how the angels
link to other paranormal stuff.
Anyway, we were emailing about two
Years ago, then he went quiet...but
now he's back in touch!
泭
SHAWNA
So, okay. In this...story, stone angels -
泭
ABBY
(interrupting) Weeping angels.
泭
SHAWNA
泭
-泭泭 don't kill people?
泭
ABBY
Yeah from what Ive read, they make
people disappear. Its a bit vague, but
it could make sense. I mean, if the
angels can make people disappear, what
else could they take? Our texts, our emails...maybe our memories?
泭
SHAWNA
Statues can't wipe memories.
泭
CLEO
I mean they can if they fall on
your head.
泭
SHAWNA
Abby, did you say youre
meeting up with this guy? Barry
泭
ABBY
Yeah Larry Nightingale, why?
泭
SHAWNA
Well its just, hes a total stranger.
And theres weird stuff going on at
the moment.
泭
ABBY
No honestly its okay, Larrys a
cool guy. He even reckons hes seen
the angels. He says theyre to blame
for the disappearance of his wife and sister.
泭
CLEO
Im sorry Abby, what?!
泭
SHAWNA
His wife and sister are missing?
泭
CLEO
So by cool guy you mean, hes
a murderer Abz?
泭
SHAWNA
Abby, do not meet with this guy please.
泭
ABBY
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭 Oh guys come on!
泭
CLEO
Oh my God wait, what if Larrys the Doctor? And that's his alias. Like "The Zodiac Killer" or "Mr Tumble".
泭
ABBY
We already agreed tomorrow afternoon.
泭
SHAWNA
Well then cancel! Ghost him before
he ghosts you literally.
泭
ABBY
I will never have this chance again.
It took him two years to reply to my
emails.
泭
A noise outside Cleo's window, like someones knocked into a heavy object.
泭
CLEO
Wait guys. Did you hear that?
泭
ABBY
(ignoring Cleo)
Look -
泭
SHAWNA
(interrupting)
New theory: Larry Nightstalker is
making people disappear. Not stone
angels.
泭
ABBY
OK hes kind of one of my heroes,
actually, so can we not?
泭
Ominous music begins to build as CLEO tries to figure out what the noise was.
SHAWNA
Why am I not surprised with your
taste in men?
泭
ABBY
What is that supposed to mean?
泭
SHAWNA
How can you be so naive?
泭
ABBY
Naive? Im naive?
泭
Abby and Shawnas argument gets quieter as Cleo goes to her
window.
泭
CLEO
One sec guys, I think theres
something outside.
泭
FX: Various squeaking floorboards.
泭
Tense music builds.
泭
Is that the sound of something clinking against brickwork as it climbs up her building?!
泭
ABBY
Shawna, Ive made my decision,
alright? Its midnight and thanks to interruptions I've only explained one
third of my research notes and Ive
not even got mum into bed yet
泭
We hear CLEO speak clearly over ABBY and SHAWNAs argument in the background.
泭
CLEO
(steadying herself and breathing out)
OK.
泭
ABBY (CONTD)
(In distance)
Do you know how many hours I spend
on this stuff? Because were in
danger and we need answers?
泭
CLEO
(forcefully) Oi! Excuse me!
Whos there? Hello!
(exasperated)
泭泭
SHAWNA
(from the laptop) Cleo?
泭
Cleo shuts the window and gets back into bed.
泭
CLEO
Sorry girls, I thought I heard
someone outside.
泭
ABBY
Well, look what youve done, Shawna.
Youve spooked Cleo.
泭
SHAWNA
Well she should be spooked. Theres
a psycho on the loose.
泭
CLEO
Guys, guys come on. Ive got work
Tomorrow and I think it would be
Better if sleep on it and sort it
out once were fresh, you know.泭
泭
ABBY
Fine. We'll talk tomorrow. After
the interview.
泭
SHAWNA
Hm.
泭
Skype hang up tone.
泭泭

Sound of Cleo dialing Shawna

Awesome! Im glad hes alright -

No, no, Shawna, listen to me. It had that
weird static on it. Like it was all distorted and stuff. And then he said
he said he was scared. And I think whoevers taking people I think they might have him too, and I really, I dont know what to do.
Shawna, I dont know what to do.

CLEO
Ugh, babe -
泭
SHAWNA

泭
泭
SCENE 6
泭
EXT. GLASGOW NECROPOLIS - NIGHT.
泭
BEEP of pressing record. Outdoor atmosphere.
泭
ABBY
This is Abby MacPhail and youre
listening to the Blue Box Files.
Im recording this out and about
from the Glasgow Necropolis. Its
about 7pm and today I was meant to
interview Larry Nightingale from
the Into The Unknown blog. Ugh But
hes nowhere to be seen. And Ive
been thinking a lot about the Weeping
Angels and...well, its only now
Im here that Ive realised. He
suggested meeting in this giant
graveyard. And there are quite a
lot of statues here...
泭
Deep, ominous music starts to play.
泭
Sound of stone scraping. Sudden burst of birds flying up into the sky. ABBY jumps.
泭
ABBY (CONTD)
Did you hear that?

泭
Record BEEP. Sound of stone scraping again. BEEP to stop the record.
泭
ABBY
I dont like this. Im giving him
ten more minutes. And if he is a
murderer Shawna: Im sorry, you
were right, I was wrong. Please dont
let it go to your head.
泭
The recording cuts. Then starts again. Tense music builds in time with ABBYs footsteps as shes walking.
泭
ABBY
Ok, Ive found something. It was on
the ground in the mud right by where
I was supposed to meet Larry. Its
an old metal box. Like properly ancient.
And its got my name on it.
泭
FX: More stone scraping. Footsteps in the grass and wet soil.
泭
ABBY
I can hear someone coming. Larry?
Is that you?
泭
Rustling as ABBY moves backwards. Footsteps move towards her then get faster. The tension builds horribly. We can hear Abby's frightened breath in the microphone.
泭
ABBY
Oh my God! Shawna! Cleo!
泭泭
SHAWNA
Come here you beautiful Scottish
lunatic!泭

we need to get out of here before
Larry Nighting-murderer shows up.

ABBY
Wait.
泭
CLEO
Listen, Abby. My little brothers
in trouble. Somethings happened
to him.
泭
ABBY
But what if our best chance of
finding him might be in this box?
泭
ABBY taps on a large metal box
泭
CLEO
Is that from Larry?
泭
SHAWNA
Fingers crossed its a Blue Peter
time capsule and not, you know,
human remains.
泭
ABBY
Right lets see. Hmm ok.
泭泭泭泭
Sound of ABBY working on a combination lock. Distant traffic in the background.
The lock snaps open.
泭
SHAWNA
Howd you do that?
泭
ABBY
2008! Its the year Larrys sister disappeared.
泭
CLEO
Oh god, it IS going to be body bits.
泭
The sound of creaking metal as ABBY opens the box.
泭
BEAT as Shawna and Abby take it in
泭
CLEO
I cant look. Guys. Guys! Whats in it?
泭
SHAWNA
Its a宇ape recorder. Really old
by the look of it. Like, 1930s old.
Lets see if it still works.
Here goes.
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭
CLUNK as an old play button is pushed. Vintage tape FX.
LARRY
(On tape)
Hey there Abby. Well, I hope its
Abby listening to this. This is Larry.
Larry Nightingale.
泭
Eerie, high pitched music plays as we hear LARRY on the recorder.
泭
LARRY
I hope you remember me. And that you
find my tape, and that it survived all
those decades buried under a hedge in the necropolis. I have a bit of explaining to do. So heres my story.
泭
Larrys voice blends from being on tape to as if hes speaking directly to them, telling the girls his story.
泭
In the background, eerie music plays, sounding spookier as his story becomes more supernatural. 泭
泭
A while ago, in 2021, you emailed me
about the blue box. Your enthusiasm
was amazing. Love the podcast, by the
way. I wanted to talk to you, I really
did, but things werent going too well
for me then. My wife Natasha had gone missing, and not long after that I
started losing my memory.
泭
At first I thought it was the worry,
the grief. Affects everyone differently, doesnt it?
泭
But then my notes started vanishing.
I had 15 years of notes on the Weeping Angels - evidence, sightings. At first, pages disappeared. Then blog posts.
Then whole folders. Ironic really.
Natasha always wished my notes would
take up less space in our kitchen.
泭
LARRY (CONTD)
Anyway. Soon, colleagues and friends
started going off the radar.
Eventually everyone would forget they
even existed.
泭
But the worst of it all was that I
began to forget Natasha. The love of
my life and it was like, she was
becoming a stranger to me in my own
head. So I confronted the angels. Id
been blaming them for my muddled brain.
I was so angry, my mind felt like it
was falling apart- I barely escaped
with my life, thanks to an old
friend.
泭
I was taken back into the 1920s.
And there she was, Natasha it was
like shed never left. As soon as I
saw my wife it was like my memory
reset. It all came back at once. I
had a banger of a headache too,
I can tell you.
泭
But the angels arent to blame for my amnesia. In fact, it was almost like
they were running from something. They
always have these monstrous, angry expressions I mean you saw the photos.
But not this time. This time they
seemed scared. I didnt think anything
was more powerful or dangerous than
the angels. But theres something
going on here. Something bigger.
泭
We hear more scraping stone sounds. Whispering, beeping, the wind picking up as the tape continues. The music becomes increasingly tense.
泭
泭
LARRY (CONTD)
Normally the Doctor would help, but
its almost like the Doctors turned
against us.
泭
LARRYs voice blends back to sounding like its coming from the tape.
泭
LARRY (CONTD)
And if thats happened
then匈 dont know how were going to
make it out of this alive.
泭
Im sorry, I cant help you. I know
this is going to leave you with more questions than answers. But its
already starting to fade again.
The angels, the Doctor, my wife,
my sister, everything
泭
But Abby: be careful. Watch
out for the Blue Box
泭
On Blue Box, LARRYs voice distorts and becomes deeper as the tape ends with a CLUNK.泭
泭
泭
SCENE 7
泭
EXT. GLASGOW NECROPOLIS NIGHT
泭
SHAWNA
Can we go now?
泭
CLEO
Wait he mentioned the Doctor.
泭
ABBY
What doctor?
泭
CLEO
The Doctor you two cant remember.
泭
SHAWNA
Guys, this is all great conspiracy theorizing we could be doing at
Abbys Mums house. 100% more
biscuits, 100% less chance of
murder.
泭
Sound of a beep. Muffled talking. People getting closer, hiding.
泭
MAN
(CLOSE, WHISPERED ON RADIO)
All three targets acquired.
泭
CLEO
Wait, did you hear that?
泭
SHAWNA
Well considering the last five
minutes of undiluted crazy youre
going to have be a bit more specific.
I mean as if he travelled in time
泭
ABBY
Shawna what more proof do you need?
Look at this thing, its ancient!
泭
SHAWNA
泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭 Come on!
泭
CLEO
No, seriously, ladies, I think
theres someone watching us. I
dont like this.
泭
We hear a radio static and the soldiers move in loudly, no longer hiding.
泭
MAN
Nobody move!

Sound of taser followed by ABBY collapsing with a thud.
泭
SHAWNA
Abby!!
泭
ABBY
Oh my god Get off her!
泭
Another taser, SHAWNA shouts and collapses.
泭
Another taser. Soldiers running forward.
泭
CLEO
DONT TOUCH ME! Get OFF! HELP!
泭
Another taser. Sound design becomes kaleidoscopic as Cleo loses consciousness.
泭
CLEO
