From the conflict in Ukraine to accusations of hacking and then sanctions, relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated dramatically under Vladimir Putin. In Russia itself, the change has been accompanied by a shift away from what are perceived as Western liberal values, with increased control over the media and political opposition suppressed. But all this has happened at a time when, on the surface, the country looks more Western than ever.
