I am Yazidi
As part of our Identity Season, Pegah Ghaemi talks to the mother of Dua, a young Yazidi woman murdered by a mob in her village, about blood, honour and religion.
Long before so called Islamic State, ISIS, emerged on the scene, the Yazidi community in Northern Iraq has been viewed with suspicion by its Muslim neighbours. They've been persecuted for centuries, but as a result, have developed a tight and very strong sense of identity; so strong that marrying out is seen as betrayal. In 2007, a young Yazidi woman, Dua, was murdered by a mob in her village for wanting to marry a Muslim. As part of our Identity Season, Pegah Ghaemi talks to Dua's mother and other Yazidis about blood, honour, religion and whether the Yazidi's current plight is changing their sense of identity.
