An Litir Bheag 1118

Tha mi a鈥 dol a chur cr矛och air an sgeul 脿 Gallaibh 鈥 鈥楢鈥 Bhanarach agus an Sealgair鈥. Air an oidhche, chuala an Gille Garbh fuaim a-muigh. Dh鈥櫭╥rich e. Bha na br脿ithrean Calder a鈥 tighinn dl霉th, le droch r霉n.

Thog e a bhogha ach bha an t-sreang briste. Chaidh e gu far an robh na sreangan eile. Bha iad uile ge脿rrte. Thuig e gun robh M脿nas Gunnach air brath a ghabhail air. Bha e air na sreangan a ghearradh le a chorcaig 鈥 sgian bheag. Chaidh an Gille Garbh far an robh M脿nas na chadal. Mharbh e e.

Dh鈥檉h脿g an Gille Garbh beannachd aig a leannan, Miss Calder. Chaidh e a-mach. Cha do mhair e fada. Chaidh a thiodhlacadh far an do thuit e.

Cha ghabhadh Miss Calder gnothach ri a br脿ithrean bhon latha sin a-mach. Dh鈥檉huirich i anns a鈥 bhothan. Ach bha i muladach. Agus chaill i an crodh aice. Bha iad air an iomain air ais a Shrath Dh霉n Bheathadh.

Bha Iain B脿n M貌r 脿 Dail a鈥 Mhuilinn 鈥 oide a鈥 Ghille Ghairbh 鈥 a-nise na n脿mhaid do na Calders. Nuair a chaidh cuid de dh鈥檈ich nan Calders air chall, chaidh ceathrar de na br脿ithrean a-mach gan lorg. Bha crois-bhoghachan aca.

Fhad 始s a bha iad a鈥 dol seachad air taigh Iain Bh脿in ann an Dail a鈥 Mhuilinn, loisg fear de na br脿ithrean air uinneag. Bha e an d霉il gum biodh Iain B脿n M貌r na shuidhe air an taobh eile. Ach cha robh e aig an taigh. Nuair a thill e dhachaigh, chaidh e fh猫in agus a thri霉ir mhac a-mach an t貌ir air na Calders.聽

Bha an ceathrar air a dhol ann an d脿 bhuidhinn. Bha dithis air rathad Allt nam Breac. Agus bha an dithis eile suas Abhainn The貌rsa. Chaidh am marbhadh le Iain B脿n M貌r agus a mic anns an d脿 脿ite.

Cha do mhair Miss Calder be貌 fada. Ach, mus do chaochail i, rinn i 貌ran 鈥 cumha 鈥 ann an G脿idhlig. Chaidh eadar-theangachadh gu Beurla. Tha e aithnichte mar 鈥Miss Calder鈥檚 Lament鈥. Cha do lorg mi na faclan G脿idhlig air a shon. Ma tha iad agaibhse, bu mhath leam cluinntinn bhuaibh.

The Little Letter 1118

I鈥檓 going to finish the story from Caithness 鈥 鈥楾he Dairymaid and the Hunter鈥. At night the Gille Garbh heard a sound outside. He rose. The Calder brothers were coming close, with evil intention.

He picked up his bow but the string was broken. He went to where the other strings were. They were all cut. He understood that Magnus Gunn had deceived him. He had cut the strings with his corkag 鈥 a small knife. The Gille Garbh went to where Magnus was sleeping. He killed him.

The Gille Garbh said farewell to his lover, Miss Calder. He went out. He didn鈥檛 survive long. He was buried where he fell.

Miss Calder would have nothing to do with her brothers from that day on. She stayed in the bothy. She was extremely sad. And she lost her cattle. They were driven back to Dunbeath Strath.

Iain B脿n M貌r from Dalnawillan 鈥 the foster-father of the Gille Garbh 鈥 was now an enemy of the Calders. When some of the Calders鈥 horses were lost, four of the brothers went out to find them. They had crossbows.

When they were going past Ian B脿n鈥檚 house in Dalnawillan, one of the brothers fired on a window. He expected that Iain B脿n M貌r would be sitting on the other side. But he wasn鈥檛 at home. When he returned home, he and his three sons went out in pursuit of the Calders.

The four men had gone into two groups. Two were on the Altnabreac road. And the other two were up the Thurso River. They were killed by Iain B脿n M貌r and his sons in both places.

Miss Calder did not live long. But, before she died, she wrote a song 鈥 a lament 鈥 in Gaelic. It was translated into English. It is known as 鈥楳iss Calder鈥檚 Lament鈥. I haven鈥檛 found the Gaelic words for it. If you have them, I would love to hear from you.
