Gravenhurst - 'Farewell Farewell'[WARP] Listen |

Gravenhurst began in 1999 after Nick Talbot, principal songwriting force and multi instrumentalist, re-located to Bristol because of his love of the then thriving alternative music scene led by the likes of Flying Saucer Attack and Third Eye Foundation.
Signed to Warp in 2004, he has 3 albums and 1 mini-album of intense, sonic, folk-influenced murder ballads under his belt.
September 2007 will see the release of a new album, The Western Lands, from which ‘Farewell Farewell’ is an exclusive preview. Gravenhurst have played countless UK and European festivals and toured with Maximo Park. They are currently touring the UK with Explosions In The Sky.

Introduction from Nick Talbot
The melody of "Farewell, Farewell" comes from the traditional folk song "Willie O'Winsbury". Richard Thompson wrote new words for it and recorded it as "Farewell, Farewell" on the Fairport Convention album "Liege and Lief" with vocals by Sandy Denny. I tried to record it as noisily as possible whilst keeping the vocal melody intact. It is a solemn and tender folk ballad, and I have smothered it in screaming fields of sonic love.

Lyrics: Farewell Farewell
Farewell, farewell to you who would hear
You lonely travellers all
The cold north wind will blow again
The winding road does call
And will you never return to see
Your bruised and beaten sons?
"Oh, I would, I would, if welcome I were
For they love me, every one"
And will you never cut the cloth
Or drink the light to be?
And can you never swear a year
To anyone of we?
"No, I will never cut the cloth
Or drink the light to be
But I'll swear a year to one who lies
Asleep along side of me"
Farewell, farewell to you who would hear
You lonely travellers all
The cold north wind will blow again
The winding road does call
