| Spandau ran through a gamut of styles in the '80s. From puffy shirted,
lacquered new romantics to the smooth High Street suited look of their
most popular spell, circa Gold. ("GOLD!") Here the band
ditch their formative Blitz-krieg era fashion for a distinctly American
style with the Kemp brothers and Steve Norman opting for the rhinestone
cowboy look (which you could fashion crudely from some old Gingham
tablecloths or grannyÂ’s curtains.) Tony Hadley meanwhile goes
for slick, pinstriped three quarter length suit and neat cravat, emulating
a kind of slick Western era, gun-slingin' pimp. (Joan Collins style
shoulder pads optional). We reckon Hadley's is the look to emulate
if you want to be noticed by the ladies. You'll need to announce yourself
at the party in foghorn fashion though by shouting "Gold!"
as you walk through the door. And don't forget to compliment a lady
by lightly brushing her arm and shouting: "You're indestructiba-aaaal"
as you head for the drinks cabinet. If you're a city boy or still
have your wedding suit in the wardrobe this look should present no
problems. Otherwise to avoid paying the big bucks in Burtons or Top
Man some second hand retro clothing shops should have what you're
after. For that final touch don't forget the Hadley, gravity-defying
wedge, held into place with liberal amounts of hairspray. Be warned
though, by his own admission, Tony always attracted the mothers so
you could be going home with the more mature lady if the suit proves
a hit. And don't insist that you wrote 12% of the songs either. We've
already had a messy court case proving you didn't. |
