Making It In The Music Biz
Video Director
Fancy making videos that sizzle with sexy shots featuring some pop madam or fella writhing around in
their pants? Then read on and find out how turn your dreams into reality...
Chris Cowey
Ex-TOTP Producer/Director Chris Cowey on what makes a good video: "If a record and a band are really strong, the video enhances that or represents it. You can spot the videos a mile off that the artists have colluded on. So, at best. I think a video is part of armoury and part of the art of an artist."
Multi-Award winning video director for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Björk and Beastie Boys on inspiration: "I like the music and I get excited about coming up with ideas for songs that I like - and that would be fun to film. Within a month you can listen to a song, come up with an idea, and if the band likes the idea, then you can complete it pretty quick."

Spike Jonze
Tom York
Radiohead's Video Commissioner on the skills you need: "People skills without a doubt. You need to be able to spot talent, have a cross-section of taste, to be honest about people's work and be constructively critical. And you have to be brave enough to walk in the door and say what's not working and to express yourself."

Shynola director (Blur, Junior Senior) on getting experience: "You need experience to work from. It doesn't matter how many books you've read but until you get round to it, you don't know what the short comings are."

Answers

There are loads of general film and media studies courses up and down the country, but plenty of people in the business come from a variety of different backgrounds.

Whatever level of course you go for, a demonstration of passion for film and music is essential. For degree and above there are varying A-level requirements.

You have to be highly passionate about music, imaginative, have people skills, a cross-section of taste, honesty, braveness and ability to express yourself.

Directors usually get 10% of the video budget. A successful UK director could make between £100k to £300k a year focusing solely on pop. Famous wordwide directors can earn millions per year.

Get a short film or pop video on tape. Then you have something to show the record company. It's no good talking about it, people will want to see what you can do.

John Hassey, Managing Director of film and music video production company Colonel Blimp: "My mother told me that I'd never get a job going to discos but she was very wrong. I went to university to study law, found it dull and changed to International Relations with American Literature which was more interesting but vocationally useless. I did find time to go to every club night that took my fancy and spent a lot of time reading books, watching films and generally becoming an opinionated little so and so."
