Israeli social contract being 'torn to pieces'

Newshour

Available for over a year

A day ahead of Israel's parliament voting on a central plank of the government's plans to overhaul the judiciary, large-scale protests have been taking place in Jerusalem. The prime minister,Benjamin Netanyahu, has been under growing pressure to scrap or water down the legislation, which seeks to limit the ability of Supreme Court judges to overrule government decisions they deem "unreasonable". Among those who've joined the protests outside parliament against the reforms is historian and author of the best-selling book "Sapiens", Professor Yuval Noah Harari. He told Newshour's Julian Marshall why he's concerned about the proposals. (Photo shows Yuval Noah Harari speaking during a demonstration.against government plans to overhaul the judiciary.
