Turkey earthquake: Why did so many new buildings collapse?

Newshour

Available for over a year

Turkish authorities have issued more than 100 arrest warrants over collapsed buildings after the earthquake that struck parts of the country and Syria. Experts say the death toll could double from the current tally of 33,000. There is growing anger that strict building regulations imposed after Turkey's last big earthquake in 1999 were not properly adhered to or enforced. Critics say corruption might have got in the way of safety. Did political decisions increase the danger people faced? Dr Karabekir Akkoyunlu, a Turkish lecturer in political science, explains.
