Afghanistan: 'People are at the absolute brink'

Newshour

Available for over a year

Afghanistan is facing a humanitarian "catastrophe" according to the UN. It has warned that millions face malnutrition. In the second winter since the Taliban took over and foreign funds were frozen, millions are a step away from famine. The World Food Programme estimates 20 million people are acutely food insecure. Some people are giving their hungry children medicines to sedate them - others have sold their daughters and organs to survive. Mary-Ellen McGroarty, the Afghanistan director for the World Food Programme, told Newshour the extent of the crisis and what can be done. "We're going into another winter, we have massive funding short falls, the humanitarian response plan is only 50% funded for 2022."
