Tensions at The Gambia/Senegal border over separatists

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The Senegalese separatists movement (MFDC) has been fighting for independence for Casamance for almost half of a century. In March, Senegalese soldiers launched reprisal attacks against the separatists which spilled over in to The Gambia, displacing聽 thousands of Gambians. Two months before, Senegalese forces and separatists clashed inside Gambian territory, resulting in the killing of four Senegalese soldiers with seven taken hostage. The dead bodies, as well as the hostages were released by the separatists thanks to negotiations by the sub-regional group Ecowas. Omar Wally travelled to the Foni region to meet residents who've been affected by these tensions. (Image: A landscape near of Diouloulou with rice crops in the region of Casamance, Senegal.
