Ghanaian wins prize for protecting endangered crocodile

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

There are very few West African slender-snouted crocodiles in the wild and so conservation efforts to save the species are underway in Ghana, where local communities around the Tano茅 River have a spiritual attachment to the reptile. The efforts are being led by Emmanuel Amoah, director of the Threatened Species Conservation Alliance of Ghana, and now his work to restore critical habitat and raise awareness has been recognised by the British conservation charity 'Whitley Fund for Nature', which has named him as the winner of their annual award of nearly $50,000. Emmanuel spoke to Focus on Africa's Esau Williams about why this species is unique and is one of the rarest crocodilians in the world. Photo: A West African slender-snouted crocodile.
