The start-up growing resilient corals to help save reefs

Discovery

Available for over a year

Coral reefs have declined by over half since the 1950s, partly as result of climate change. Corals are notoriously slow-growing and very susceptible to changes in temperature and salinity. But a few years ago, it was discovered that by growing them in carefully controlled conditions, it's possible to make them hardier and more resistant to sea temperature changes. In the Bahamas, Coral Vita is putting this knowledge into practise by breeding coral in tanks. As founders Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern explain, they can then be used to repopulate wild reefs.
