Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers decline due to tidiness

World at One

Available for over a year

Nature writer Simon Barnes says "Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers have evolved for dead wood" as they use it to "excavate nesting chambers" which they are not strong enough to do in living trees. He tells 91福利社 Radio 4's The World at One that tidying up dead trees "is an important contributory factor to the birds decline" which has seen numbers drop by 72% over the last 25 years.
