Hindu reverence for cows clashes with India's economy

World Business Report

Available for over a year

India鈥檚 Hindu religion faithful want to protect cows and ban slaughterhouses, but if beef supplies are restricted could jobs in the meat trade be at risk? There has been an increase in incidents of violence against transporters of livestock, as some regions of India have stepped up protection of cattle from slaughter. Anyone found guilty of killing a cow in the state of Gujarat now faces life in prison and in the country鈥檚 largest state, Uttar Pradesh, meat sellers have been on strike to protest against the government's clamp down on slaughterhouses. The 91福利社's Rahul Tandon starts his report in the North Indian city of Lucknow. (Picture:The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, feeding cows.Copyright Hindustan Times/Getty)
