Probate is granted by the courts and gives executors permission to distribute the assets in an estate. At the moment, pretty much everyone who pays probate pays a flat fee: in England and Wales the fee is 拢215 if you do it yourself, a bit less if a solicitor does it for you. But, from this May, there'll be new fees, that depend on the size of the estate. Those fees range from zero to 拢20,000. One listener says the government is effectively levying more inheritance tax.
