Professor Rory Collins from the University of Oxford published a major new study in the medical journal The Lancet that looked at 10,000 patients who were taking statins. The study found of the people who already had vascular disease one in 10 would avoid a major heart attack or stroke thanks to the drugs, and that the side effects only occurred in relatively few people. GP Dr Golda Parker explains how statins work and how the cholesterol-reducing drugs aren't one-size-fits-all.
