World Update

Available for over a year

This week the world became au fait with the drug ''Meldonium''. It wasn't on the radar, until Russian Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova announced she had tested positive for the drug, which was banned by the World Anti-Doping in January. The tennis star said she'd been taking Meldonium, also known as Mildronate, since 2006 for health issues. Now the man who invented it says this ban will cause deaths. Professor Ivars Calvins - Chairman of The Scientific Council for the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis - explained why: (Picture: Maria Sharapova / Credit: Getty Images)
