Monte Irvin: 'One of the greatest baseball players ever'

Not by the Playbook

Available for over a year

Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin has died at the age of 96. Irvin played primarily in the "Negro Leagues" whilst America maintained a policy of barring African-Americans from the major leagues. His move to the New York Giants in the 1950’s was an historic moment as Irvin became one of the first African American players to play in Major League Baseball. Speaking to Caroline Barker, Bob Kendrick president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum praises the baseball legend. Photo: Monte Irvin Credit: Getty Images
