Wyndham Place, Marylebone: 91福利社 of Association of German Governesses

World War One At 91福利社

Available for over a year

During the early part of the 20th Century, German governesses were a popular addition to upper class households in England. The outbreak of World War One effectively ended their role. In 1914, there were more than 1,000 German governesses in England. The Association of German Governesses in England was based in Marylebone, London. The governesses worked in private houses and some private schools educating children. They were popular because German governesses had been employed by the Royal family. When war broke out, most of the governesses were dismissed and the majority were allowed to return to Germany. The war effectively killed the profession in England.
