'There is a British tradition of welcoming desperate people'

Victor Sebestyen's family arrived in the UK from Hungary in 1956. He recalls that 'Britain had just gone through the rigours of the war and yet they welcomed over 40,000 Hungarian refugees in just a few months'. 'People opened up their houses. Even bombed-out houses'. Speaking on the reaction of the UK to the current refugee crisis, Sebestyen said, ''Politicians have got it wrong. There is a real British tradition of welcoming desperate people'.
