George Robey was born in Herne Hill in 1869 and became one of the country’s best loved music hall comedians. He was known for many years as the Prime Minister of Mirth and was one of London’s top entertainers during World War One. In 1916, Robey starred in ‘The Bing Boys Are Here’, which featured songs such as “If You Were the Only Girl” (in the World). Throughout the war he was involved in fundraising for charities such as St Dunstan’s, raising money for wounded soldiers. In 1954, George Robey received a knighthood. He died later that year.
