Tipperary: It鈥檚 a Long, Long Way

World War One At 91福利社

Available for over a year

It鈥檚 a Long Way to Tipperary, along with Pack Up Your Troubles and Keep the 91福利社fires Burning, became one of the songs that defined the First World War. Allegedly written as a bet, this music hall favourite became a marching song for soldiers making their way to the front. Originally reported by George Curnock from the Daily Mail after seeing the Connaught Rangers arriving at Boulogne, it went on to become hugely popular among the British forces. But, as Denis Marnane explains, the song had nothing to do with the town it is named after. Location: Tipperary town, Co.
