Senate Intelligence Committee 'shocked' by CIA 'torture'

Today

Available for over a year

The CIA carried out "brutal" interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects in the years after the 9/11 attacks on the US, a US Senate report has said. The agency has apologised but said the techniques did produce intelligence that helped save lives. Dianne Feinstein, the chair of the committee behind the report, told the 91福利社's Jon Sopel: "I was shocked by what we found. I understand what the time was like, I understand what happened on 9/11. We wanted to bring whoever was guilty to justice. But this isn't the kind of justice that America practices." "It is possible to get valuable intelligence without torturing an individual." "The CIA needs to be led by people who really will follow the law, who will not make exceptions." First broadcast Today programme 10 December 2014.
