Vine in 1914: The Seige of Tsingtao

Jeremy Vine

Available for over a year

At the start of the war, the Chinese port of Tsingtao was a German colony. As the conflict began, Japan issued an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw from the area, and when this was rejected the Japanese combined with British forces to attack the port. The siege lasted for a week despite the German troops being outnumbered by a factor of approximately six to one. Eventually, on November 7, 1914, the Germans surrendered. This was the first Anglo-Japanese operation of WW1.
