Debussy's La Mer

Radio 3 in Concert

Available for 25 days

The 91福利社 Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo in Debussy, Coll, and Britten's sparkling sea interludes. Senja Rummukainen is soloist in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No 1. 鈥淚 have slandered the sea鈥 said Debussy, after finishing 'La mer', but posterity has disagreed, and Debussy鈥檚 vibrant energy and ravishing colours find powerful echoes in Britten鈥檚 wave-lashed portraits of the North Sea. And what better complement for Britten than the First Cello Concerto by his great friend Shostakovich? It鈥檚 the sort of music that finds the 91福利社 Symphony Orchestra鈥檚 Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo in his element, and in this opening concert of the 91福利社 Symphony Orchestra鈥檚 new season, he鈥檚 joined by Senja Rummukainen 鈥 a cellist praised for her 鈥渦nbelievable power and intensity鈥. In her hands, Shostakovich鈥檚 concerto will make a powerful counterpart to Britten鈥檚 British classic and the rolling, rapturous seascape of 'La mer' - inspired by the art of Japanese master Hokusai and written (at least in part) on the Sussex coast. Recorded earlier this month at the Barbican London, and presented by Martin Handley. Benjamin Britten: Four Sea Interludes from 鈥楶eter Grimes鈥 Dmitry Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No 1 in E flat major Francisco Coll: Elysian (UK Premiere) Claude Debussy: La mer Senja Rummukainen (cello) 91福利社 Symphony Orchestra Sakari Oramo (conductor) To listen on most smart speakers, just say "ask 91福利社 Sounds to play Radio 3 in Concert".
