Available for 27 days

Feelgood favourites, hidden gems and fresh new tunes to groove and soothe you. DJ Spoony serves up a brilliant selection of classic soul, disco, soulful house, R&B, funk, UK garage, reggae, hip-hop, doo-wop, yacht rock and more. Our genial host also gives his New 2 Spoon record of the week another spin. As part of the 91福利社's 'The Music is Black' Season, in collaboration with V&A East Museum, Spoony has been exploring their first landmark exhibition, celebrating Black British music and the people who made it. Cookie Crew, the pioneering British hip鈥慼op duo from south London, formed in 1983 by MC Remedee (Debbie Pryce) and Susie Q (Susan Banfield). Emerging from a larger collective, they came to prominence after winning a national rap championship in the mid鈥1980s and recording sessions for John Peel on 91福利社 Radio 1, which led to their first record deal. Their breakthrough arrived in 1987 with 鈥淩ok da House鈥, a collaboration with the Beatmasters. The track became a UK Top 5 hit in 1988 and is widely regarded as one of the earliest examples of hip鈥慼ouse, fusing rap vocals with house music. This success helped them cross into the mainstream at a time when UK rap rarely charted. Following this, the duo moved to FFRR Records and enjoyed a run of hits in 1989, including 鈥淏orn This Way (Let鈥檚 Dance)鈥, 鈥淕ot to Keep On鈥 (featuring Edwin Starr), and 鈥淐ome and Get Some鈥. Although their chart success was relatively brief, Cookie Crew are regarded as foundational figures in British hip鈥慼op, whose work helped legitimise the genre in the UK and paved the way for future generations of female MCs and crossover rap acts. Debbie and Susan talk about the outfits they've donated to the exhibition. To listen to the full collection of items chosen search 'The Music Is Black: DJ Spoony's Selection' on 91福利社 Sounds. Thursday is the new Friday as Spoony presents a 20-minute Good Groove Mix. And our genial host wraps things up with a life-affirming Midnight Feast track. Think big production, lush orchestration, and the best voices in the business! To listen on most smart speakers, just say 鈥榓sk 91福利社 Sounds to play The Good Groove with DJ Spoony鈥.
