The exploration of V&A East's Museum's The Music is Black exhibition, celebrating 125 years of black British music, continues as Spoony and curator Jacqueline Springer check out a splendid velvet bowtie. The item's owner was the dapper Lord Woodbine (born Harold Phillips) who was a Trinidadian calypso musician and music promoter based in Liverpool. Lord Woodbine is best known as an early mentor to the Beatles. He helped shape the band in their formative years, giving them early gigs in his clubs and played a key role in arranging their first trips to Hamburg, which proved crucial to their development.
