In the early '90s, Gini Bhogal got talking to a woman on the train, called Anita. She told Gini she was struggling to conceive and needed an egg donor. Gini volunteered on the spot, and soon baby Christopher was born. For years, Gini kept in touch with the family, watching Chris grow up from afar, occasionally meeting in person. But Chris had no idea they were related, until his parents broke the news during lockdown, when he was twenty six. Now, four years on, he says he's lucky to have "two mama bears" who he loves dearly. This is a story about chance, generosity, secrecy, identity and what happens when a decision made in a single moment can have a ripple effect across generations. But what's the deal with egg donation today and why does there remain such a shortage of South Asian donors in the UK?
