For nearly 50 years, Liverpool Stadium on Bixteth Street stood as one of the UK’s most iconic boxing venues. Opening in 1932 as Britain’s first purpose-built boxing arena, it played host to countless British and World title fights, high-level amateur contests, and even events beyond the ring — from wrestling to political rallies to legendary rock concerts in the 1970s.

Now, decades after its closure, the site is being honoured once more. A memorial stone has been unveiled in nearby St Paul’s Square, crowdfunded by the Merseyside Former Boxers Association to commemorate the venue’s incredible legacy. 91¸£ÀûÉç Radio Merseyside’s Marc Gaier visited the new memorial and spoke to former amateur boxer Terry Kavanagh about what made the stadium such a vital part of the city’s sporting and cultural history.
