Before joining the RAF in World War Two, Alan Green's family ran the only camera shop in Coventry. He was called for conscription and trained as a navigator, he became Pilot Officer Alan Green. During one of his assignments his plane was shot down, he was captured and taken to Stalag Luft III, a Luftwaffe-run prisoner-of-war camp. He later took part in The Long March, a forced march of prisoners of war from Poland through to Berlin in very cold conditions.

During his capture he wrote letters home, which are read by his son Stuart Green.
