Basildon and the D-Day hero
103-year-old Don Sheppard is the oldest Normandy veteran in Essex, and has been looking back at his role as a Royal Engineer in the D-Day operations of June 1944. Don was born in Laindon and now lives in nearby Basildon and is determined to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at a memorial he helped to design in Rettendon.
