Exotic pets 'given up' in Cheshire
A record number of animals, including exotic pets, are being given up according to the Bacchus Residents Rescue in Congleton. They believe the rise in cases is down to the cost of living.
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs says:
鈥淲e are committed to raising the bar for animal welfare standards and it is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to fail to provide for the welfare needs of an animal, including exotic pets.
鈥淲e have also increased the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty to five years and are currently legislating to ban the keeping of primates as pets.鈥
