International reaction to death of Bobby Sands
William Horsley reports on the international reaction to the death of IRA hunger striker and MP Bobby Sands.
In America, New York State governor Hugh Carey and New York Congressman Mario Biaggi were critical of the Thatcher government鈥檚 response, while Senator Edward Kennedy鈥檚 reaction was more muted.
Moscow鈥檚 Tass news agency described the Maze prison as a concentration camp. In Norway, the Queen was nearly hit by an object thrown by an IRA sympathiser. The European parliament is set to debate the crisis and the Vatican hopes Sands鈥 death will not provoke more violence.
