Live from Vienna

Petroc Trelawny introduces the annual Vienna Philharmonic New Year鈥檚 Day concert taking place at the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in the heart of Vienna.

The Vienna Philharmonic鈥檚 much loved annual New Year鈥檚 Day concert returns once again to the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Petroc Trelawny introduces the orchestra live from Vienna for Radio 3 as this great orchestra sweeps through waltzes, marches, galops and polkas, led this year by Maestro Yannick N茅zet鈥慡茅guin. The 2026 programme blends perennial favourites with first鈥憈ime discoveries: Johann Strauss鈥檚 overture to Indigo and the Forty Thieves, Ziehrer鈥檚 Danube Legends, Josephine Weinlich鈥檚 Siren Songs and Florence Price鈥檚 radiant Rainbow Waltz, alongside treasures by Lanner, Supp猫, Josef and Eduard Strauss, and Hans Christian Lumbye鈥檚 exuberant Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop. The concert culminates in the traditional encores - the Blue Danube and the rousing Radetzky March. As ever, the Philharmonic offers this performance as a musical greeting to audiences worldwide, in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace at the dawn of 2026.
