As
a symbol of Victorian success the Town Hall dominates the city centre
skyline at the west end of Leeds. An enduring image of Leeds that
once housed the seat of power for the city. |

designed and built after a competition held in 1852 won by the (then)
unknown Cuthbert Broderick.
Mr
Broderick was also responsible for the Corn Exchange and the Civic
Institute buildings in the city.
"The
tower and dome were added in 1857 before being opened by the visit
of Queen Victoria in 1858.
"A
superb example of civic pride and confidence in the fast growing
Leeds.
"Originally the building housed law courts, police headquarters
and the council chamber and Lord Mayor's room.
