This Island City

Poems about the city of Portsmouth, its people and history have been illustrated by a series of films produced by students at the University of Chichester.

The 10 films have been produced to publicise the forthcoming anthology of poems about Portsmouth by local poetry collective, Tongues and Grooves.

The Tongues and Grooves group which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year provides a regular platform for local writers and musicians alongside special guests at the Florence Arms in Southsea.

Its new anthology due for publication later this year, entitled This Island City, aims to celebrate Pompey's literary and cultural heritage.

Edited by Dale Gunthorp, the collection is the first poetic record of Britain's only island city, in poems from the 17th century to the present.

It covers many aspects of Portsmouth life - from its turbulent, glorious and sometimes tragic relationship with the sea, to its people, with their intense sense of community and ownership of the place.

Chichester University students were given a brief to produce films to interpret the poems in an original and imaginative way.

The films were shot at familiar locations around the city - including the Spinnaker Tower, Southsea Station, Gun Wharf and Guildhall Square.

The Salvation Army Lady

One of the films is narrated by a familiar voice - actress Joanna Lumley was approached by one group of students to record a voiceover for their film, based on the poem Stone Map in Ravelin Park by Anna-May Laugher.

Ms Lumley obliged by recording a voice track for the film, which along with others, is being screened at the launch of the anthology later this year and on the 91福利社 Big Screen in Guildhall Square throughout June and July.
