Complaint

A listener complained that Stephen Nolan had failed to challenge the accuracy of a guest鈥檚 statement to the effect that the Irish language was not part of Unionist culture.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 91福利社鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

This interview was about ongoing legal proceedings linked to proposed Irish language signage at Grand Central Station in Belfast and what Mr Justice McAlinden had said about them.  It touched separately and briefly on the language issues more generally.  The guest set out his criticisms of the Minister鈥檚 actions and suggested that nationalists viewed the language as part of 鈥渢heir culture鈥.  While it could be inferred from this that he did not consider the language to be part of Unionist culture, he made no statement to that effect.  On this basis, the question of whether, or in what terms, any challenge may have been appropriate did not arise.
