Complaint
This bulletin included a report on a recent Executive Order by President Trump which the presenter introduced as banning 鈥渢ransgender athletes from female sports competitions鈥 in the USA. Four viewers complained this was misleading, as the order did not prevent trans men from taking part in female sports competitions. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 91福利社鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
The ECU agreed that the Order did not have the effect of excluding all transgender athletes from female sporting competitions, but noted that the 91福利社鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines require 鈥渄耻别鈥, rather than absolute, accuracy. The item included a clip of President Trump in which he referred to not allowing 鈥渕别苍鈥 to compete in women鈥檚 events, making it clear his order was aimed at trans women. In the ECU鈥檚 judgment this would have prevented viewers from forming the misleading impression complained of, and the report was duly accurate.
