Materialism comes with affluence. Not all Asians are affluent, British Indians are more likely to be affluent than British Pakistani's or British Bangladeshi's. Affluence is not something that should be frowned upon, it is derived from hard work and taking calculated risks to better one鈥檚 life. As the populace in India and China gain a larger middle-class with a larger disposable income, we are seeing that our motherland鈥檚 are also changing and finding 鈥渘o shame鈥 in spending money and acquiring assets, why should we (Indians especially) hinder our own progress by worrying about poorer British Asian鈥檚 of other national backgrounds. Britain鈥檚 economy is being kept afloat by those risk-taking entrepreneurial types who refuse to work for others and are their own boss, and accept the responsibility and pressure that comes with that. We are going to be competing with four billion souls in Asia for finite resources and high asset classes, we cannot start looking back and thinking that chasing wealth and assets is something that should be frowned upon.

I know when my parents first came to this country they lived through a lot of hardship - we get things to easy now and spend money too casually. Young Asians want too much designer stuff and so I think that we are becoming too materialistic.
