An Exmoor Pony

One of the young ponies at the Centre

Dulverton's Exmoor Pony Centre

How cute are Exmoor ponies? Very! 91福利社 Somerset's Helen Otter headed over to the equine charity to learn more about them, and to find out why the young colts are brought off the moor every autumn.

Helen spoke to the Chief Executive of the Centre, and founder of The Moorland Mousie Trust charity (which works solely for the benefit of the Exmoor pony), Valerie Sherwin.

Click on the audio link below to hear Valerie talking about the look and character of the breed - you could be surprised to learn that their nature is actually quite different than what their reputation may have lead you to believe:

Horse expert Sarah Weston has worked with the Centre since 2002,听giving help and guidance with handling the Exmoors.

Sarah was on-hand to explain how and why the young ponies are brought off the moor every autumn, and what happens to them next:

A Recommended Associate of Intelligent Horsemanship and a holder of the Monty Robert's Preliminary Certificate in Horsemanship, Sarah handles the untouched Exmoor colts so that they can go out to fosterers.

Learn more about her work, and find out how Helen gets on when she works with one of the foals:

Sarah says that her methods of working with the young Exmoors are logical to the ponies and involve the use of their own body language rather than the use of artificial aids.

The Exmoor ponies are a timid bunch - you don't always see them when you're on the moor.

Listen to Chief Executive Valerie Sherwin talking about how and why the Centre was founded, and how by visiting the Centre you can learn more about the ponies and interact with them as well.

You can also find out how to get involved and become a volunteer:
