Winter walking essentials

Heather Morning, Mountain Safety Adviser for the , meets Out of Doors producer Helen Needham in the Cairngorms to give her advice on the essential equipment for an autumn or winter walk in the Scottish hills.

Heather, who is also a SARDA rescue dog handler, says that while having the right equipment is important, knowing how to use it can be a life-saving matter.

The use of weather forecasts, route planning and navigation are all taught on winter skills courses available from many outdoor training centres in Scotland. Organisations such as the and the run subsidised courses.

For those not confident of their skills, an option is to hire an qualified winter mountain instructor and spread the cost between a group, or to join an organised walk.
