Flora MacDonaldFact Book: Flora MacDonald

Born 1722. Died 1790.

Flora MacDonald became famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to France after he was beaten at the battle of Culloden. The Duke of Cumberland's soldiers were searching the Highlands and islands of Scotland for the Prince and Flora felt sorry for him.

  • She was brought up on the Isle of Skye but was living on the island of Benbecula when she met Prince Charles
  • She dressed Prince Charles as a woman to help him escape! He hated wearing dresses!
  • She could have been hanged for helping the prince to escape to France
  • Flora was arrested and thrown in jail in the Tower of London for helping Charles to escape
  • She was seen as a very brave woman for doing what she did and plenty of people admired her
  • She said she helped Prince Charles just because he needed help. She said she would have helped anyone who needed help – even the Duke of Cumberland!
  • She even met the Duke of Cumberland and he liked her a lot!

She was released from jail after a year and in 1750 she married and moved to America. She returned to Scotland in 1789 and died the next year aged 68.
