Born 1720. Died 1788.

Charles Edward Stuart was the son of James Francis Stuart (the "Old Pretender") and grandson of James VII of Scotland (also known as James II of England).

Charles Edward started the Jacobite Rising in 1745 to win the crown of England and Scotland back for his father.

  • Bonnie Prince Charlie's supporters were called Jacobites
  • The word Jacobite comes from the Latin for his grandfather's name – James. In Latin James is called Jacobus
  • Bonnie Prince Charlie grew up in Italy and he had never been to Scotland until he started the rising
  • He was only 25 when he started the rising!
  • He was a charming and attractive young man but he was also seen as inexperienced and a little bit in love with himself!
  • After the rising failed he went back to live in Italy
  • His last years were not happy ones and he drank far too much. He died in Rome at the age of 68.
