Tom's Story

Tom George left his home in Acle Norfolk and joined as boy drummer in the Coldstream Guards. During his early years in the Regiment he met his future wife, Alice, a maid in the Royal Household at Windsor and St James's Palace. First out with the BEF his only home leave was in 1916 at Glamis Castle to recover after being wounded on the Somme.

As a dispatch rider he was shot in the leg in No-mans land, but rescued after 2 nights by a patrol of Ghurkas and returned to UK to recuperate. (What was a musician doing as a dispatch rider?)

He remained in France Belgium and Germany until his return home in 1919.
