Funding for specialist groups within the community

Many black and minority ethnic women鈥檚 organisations are in peril according to Imkaan, an organisation that supports a network of refugees for black and Asian women. One such organisation, Southall Black Sisters, is facing an uncertain future because as a charity it caters for a specific group and does not cater for the whole community. It is therefore concerned that its core funding will be given to a more generic organisation. The Department of Communities and Local Government want local authorities to consider how funding can be better used to support greater interaction within the community. It is suggesting that groups should only be funded where there is a demonstrable case for doing so.

Jane discusses the future of such organisations with Hannana Siddiqi from Southall Black Sisters, Anjum Mouj of Imkaan, and Richard Kemp of the Local Government Association.
